Mercury Technology Centre

The Mercury Technology Center promotes applied research and technological solutions to reduce the impact of mercury on health, the environment, and industry.

Mercury

Mercury is one of the most dangerous substances for human health, ecosystems, and wildlife. What for year was considered a local problem, is now recognized as a global, diffuse, and persistent challenge that demands coordinated responses and grounded in scientific knowledge.

In this context, the Mercury Technology Centre was created with the aim of addressing the social, scientific, and technological needs related to mercury. Its establishment is framed within Regulation (EU) 2017/852, the Minamata Convention, and the European Zero Pollution Strategy, reflecting the European Union´s strong commitment to protecting human health and the environment.

A center for research and innovation

The center is conceived as a reference space that brings together initiatives in research, innovation, technological development, and sustainable management of mercury and its applications.

Our mission is to advance scientific knowledge, promote safe practices, and contribute to environmental protection through the development of advanced technologies that address the challenges associated with mercury.

Collaboration and technological vocation

The center has a distinctly open and collaborative spirit, working alongside research groups, universities, institutes, and national and international organizations to jointly address the global challenges posed by mercury.

With a strong technological vocation, priority is given to research that can be transformed into practical and applicable solutions in industrial, environmental, and health-related fields.

Our objectives

Among the Center´s main objectives are the following:
