External Services

The Mercury Technology Centre (CTM) provides specialized services for the management, control, and adaptation of facilities in which mercury is present, offering comprehensive technical solutions tailored to each case.

Our objective is to support companies and public administrations in identifying risks, addressing contamination, and ensuring the safety of facilities and people, in full compliance with current regulations.

Environmental diagnosis of mercury

CTM carries out environmental diagnostic studies in facilities where mercury is used or has been used, with the aim of identifying emission sources, assessing contamination levels, and defining corrective actions.

  • In situ mercury measurement in air using high‑sensitivity portable equipment with real‑time detection.
  • Specific analysis of the facility (processes, layout, ventilation).
  • Identification of critical areas and emission sources.
  • Assessment of environmental and occupational risk.

Each intervention is designed on a case‑by‑case basis and results in a comprehensive technical report that includes conclusions and recommendations to improve safety conditions and reduce exposure.

In cases where spills or active contamination are detected, CTM can intervene immediately through the safe removal of mercury, decontamination, and waste management via authorized handlers.

Adaptation of facilities containing mercury

CTM provides an integrated approach to securing and conditioning facilities containing mercury, combining technical fieldwork with specialized advisory services.

Main performances

  • Environmental diagnosis and control of mercury.
  • Removal, filtration, and recovery of metallic mercury.
  • Cleaning and decontamination of equipment and work areas (trays, optical systems, tanks).
  • Verification of results through measurement campaigns.
  • Design of technical solutions: ventilation, activated‑carbon filtration, zone isolation.

These actions allow to reduce exposure, minimize risks, and ensure the safe operation of the facility.

Specialized technical assistance

CTM provides technical support to companies and public administrations in mercury management, offering expert knowledge and applied experience.

  • Advice on the management of mercury‑containing waste
  • Technical review of industrial hygiene reports and risk assessments
  • Analysis of occupational exposure and definition of sampling strategies
  • Proposal for preventive measures and improvement of working conditions

Experience in the port sector

CTM has worked with Puertos del Estado and several Port Authorities, operating in unique facilities such as lighthouses equipped with optical systems based on mercury troughs.

In this field, comprehensive actions have been carried out, including:

  • Environmental diagnosis
  • Mercury cleaning and recovery
  • Facility adaptation
  • Exposure control

These actions aim to improve safety, reduce contamination, and facilitate the future management of these infrastructures.

Training and Knowledge Transfer

CTM complements its activity with the specialized training of technical personnel, particularly in the port sector.

It participates as an instructor in courses that address:

  • Mercury behavior
  • Associated risks
  • Exposure assessment
  • Preventive measures

This training work trains equip professionals to safely manage mercury‑containing facilities.
