The NTCMD was invited to this workshop, organized by the Government of Uruguay and the Basel Convention Coordinating Center for the LAC region to present the technique of stabilization / microencapsulation in a sulphur polymeric matrix of waste mercury.
The pilot project has as main objective to give practical solutions to the waste generated by chlorine-caustic industry in the region and abroad.
The workshop participated all stakeholders in the environmental problem caused by mercury waste, the Government of Uruguay through DINAMA (National Directorate of Environment) and the private sector chlorine alkali industry.
The workshop is aimed, to develop a pilot project for treatment / stabilization of mercury waste generated in this industry, by implementing the technique of stabilization / microencapsulation in a sulphur polymeric matrix of waste mercury.
The project results will be used to develop the road map for the implementation of the Convention in Uruguay Minamata.
