The creation of the Mercury Technological Center comes at a time of great international interest in the environment and pollution from mercury and other heavy metals.

The Centre has various areas and departments to help it deliver on its goals:

The Storage Area, specifically dedicated to research on mercury and mercury-waste confinement technology.

The Environmental Surveillance Area, which performs environmental controls in areas historically related to mercury production and can be exported to other areas associated with the use of mercury in the past or present.

The Centre acts as a scientific and technical advisor to national and regional public administrations that seek its assistance; accordingly, it also has an External Services Area.

The R&D Area is responsible for coordinating mercury-related R&D and innovation projects, providing the necessary technological support, finding funding and helping lines of development and innovation for results.

The Centre also has a Management Area responsible for supporting the above mentioned activities.
